The First Day of Kindergarten

The day started out like any other, yet it had "milestone" written all over it.

You see, Friday was my baby's first day of kindergarten.

I thought I was prepared for it, and I even joked about crying on the big day. But I didn't think I'd actually sob.

Yep... I sobbed.

No matter how tough I think I am, my kids can turn me to mush in the blink of an eye. They have the most profound effect on me... every milestone, success, failure and hurt they experience affects me like it's my own. All parents can relate, because our kids mean the world to us.

So, even though my son was every bit the seasoned kindergartener on that sunny Friday morning, I cried. When his new teacher asked him if he was a senior kindergartener (it's a JK/SK split class), my heart soared. It reinforced what I already knew deep down - that my little man is a loveable, fun, social creature, and so ready for this new adventure!

Once the bell rang I moved on with my day, and it was a productive one. I returned to the school refreshed and ready to take on the world.

My little guy was waiting on the playground, all smiles, and ran into my arms when he saw me.

"Mommy!" he shouted, "I had a great day!"

I didn't expect anything less. :)

How did your child's first day of school go? We're they nervous, or cool as a cucumber? We'd love to hear all about it, including any tips you used to prepare for the big day. Feel free to comment below, share on our Facebook wall, or tweet us!

Sounds like your son is ready for school! It's hard for us Mommas to see them grow up but it's also amazing to see them become independent people. Thanks for sharing!

Awww I love how he reported that he had a great day! Today is my little one's first day of preschool and I can barely write this as I STILL have tears in my eyes. She was SO happy and excited, she forgot to say goodbye to me. :( I kept preparing her with scenarios at home and playing teacher and having stations at home. Preschool was much more exciting though because everything was new and colorful! But yes - I sobbed too (more like "sobbing")

it makes it so much easier when they are excited to go doesn't it? A new neighbour was at the bus stop with her sobbing child and I literally almost started crying too! lol Can you imagine? All kids apparently turn me to mush! lol

I dropped my son off for the first day at Day Care (he only goes two days a week for half a day) and I teared up. I can't imagine what is going to happen once he goes to school!

It's funny, because my big ugly cry moment was the day before, when we were getting her stuff ready to go to school. The day of, her excitement got rid of any tears I had!

Awww, that's so cute! (I'll admit - I didn't cry.) I love milestones, though. Such a great moment to remember, so thanks for sharing it! :)
